Thyroid Diseases & Mental Health

Thyroid Diseases. As we continue to acknowledge Thyroid Awareness Month, I feel is fundamental to explore the many types of thyroid conditions. Having gone through a thyroid cancer diagnosis, I was able to learn more in-depth about this precious organ and the different types of conditions many people face nowadays. Which include some of the following:

  1. Thyroiditis (pain, inflammation)
  2. Graves’ disease (a common form of hyperthyroidism)
  3. Hashimoto’s disease (the leading cause of hypothyroidism)
  4. Goiter (occurs when the thyroid gland becomes enlarged)
  5. Thyroid nodule (many don’t cause symptoms)
  6. Thyroid cancer (several types, but papillary most common)

All these types of thyroid conditions have different effects on our bodies and different treatment options are offered. Whether you choose to follow a holistic or conventional approach, by now you know that I am a faithful believer that the fight against an illness is not only physical, it’s also mental. It all begins in the mind, therefore our biggest battle will be in our thoughts. I usually try to be very protective of my thought life and as many of you already know, I am a strong believer of bringing our thoughts captive and in alignment with the mind and heart of God.

Having gone through a thyroid cancer diagnosis was very hard. But I can honestly tell you that the journey has been transformational and why not a blessing in my life. A journey of healing, learning, restoration, transformation, and an opportunity to live again. I want to leave you here some tips that I have found useful to help me keep a resilient mind. I hope you find them useful!

Thyroid Diseases

*Honor yourself, your feelings & your needs

*Find your support system

*Bless those who hurt you and of course those that love you

*Learn techniques that will help you to self-regulate (ex: breathing exercises)

*Practice prayer

*Don’t self-medicate

*Ask for help when in need

And remember, you are strong, you are powerful, you are beautiful right where you are and I believe in you!
