My 5 Pillars Of Health - Karen Berrios

My 5 Pillars Of Health

Did you know that Numerologists agree that number 5 describes balance? Be it the delicate balance of nature, or the balance of life…this often means something to people who are under the influence of this number.

In the bible, 5 signifies grace. There are many references that show this number means something to God and thus, should mean something to us.

Here are some thing Biblestudy.org says about the number 5,

The number 5 symbolizes God’s grace, goodness and favor toward humans and is mentioned 318 times in Scripture… There are 5 primary types of offerings God commanded Israel to bring to him… The Book of Psalms is divided into 5 major sections… There are five books of God’s Law (commonly referred to as the Pentateuch)… The ‘tabernacle in the wilderness’ profoundly reflects God’s grace in its use of the number 5.” (The last one from it’s dimensions and decor.)

It is no surprise to me I lean on exactly 5 pillars of health, as I feel it is God’s grace in the first place that leads to my healing. Whether it is his divine grace and healing, or he is pointing me in the right direction, or he is guiding my heart.. It’s through God that I heal and I find these 5 pillars to be a representation of God’s works. How he uniquely created the body and our world and how we can use it.

You will see woven throughout my five pillars that they all correlate with each other. If one suffers, they all suffer. If I am doing good in one area, I am doing better in all the areas! Again, 5 is the number of balance.

Tell me which pillar speaks most to you!

Pillar one: Physical

The first pillar has to do with my physical body and how I am treating it. The foods I am eating, how often I am intentionally moving my body, the sleep I am giving myself. All of these are physical factors.

When it comes to food, I highly rely on a plant based diet. I believe God created plants that were meant to heal and he knew that with his faith, we had everything on earth we would need to stay healthy. That’s not to say bad things won’t happen, but that God is all around us answering prayers through the resources he has given us. I use food as resource, and make sure daily that I am nourished with foods that will vitalize me.

When it comes to intentionally moving my body, I am all about not staying stagnant. The body is meant to move and sweat! I enjoy stretching and pilates and long walks with my family. When I move my body, it helps me feel less stuck. Physically and emotionally (which we will get into soon.)

The last of physical needs within this pillar is sleep! It’s not about the hours you stay asleep but more about the quality of your sleep! Dark rooms, no caffeine too late, a soothing environment…sleep is one of the most important parts of this pillar.

Pillar two: Mental

Mentally we need to stay strong and rooted in faith! Unwavering. I keep myself in the mental state of what I think Jesus would be like: positive and purpose driven. I do have days where I get down and my thoughts get the best of me, but I never let myself stay down for long! I always rely on my tough mentality to keep me through some of the hardest days.

A cancer diagnosis will rock you, you need to stay strong with a mind that will keep you up. Keep you thinking logically and keeping your eyes forward. Life is not over!

We are constantly bombarded with mental warfare, taking care of our mental health is needed for the other pillars to function properly!

Pillar three: Emotional

Many people talk about how God expressed himself like calm waters- no matter what happened he didn’t “spike” emotionally. Yes he was passionate, but he was always even keel and could not be blind sided emotionally. He was in control of himself.

My advice is to see what your triggers are, what stresses you the most, and make habits and environments that enable you to be less stressed. To be more calm and cool and collected.

When we are overly emotionally in a negative way, he can make us go into fight or flight mode. This is not good for our body and this makes us weak! We need to be able to get into parasympathetic mode as often as possible and get there as quick as possible, even when we are having a “breakdown.”

It is okay to be emotional and to feel things deeply. I am an empath and I very much know what this feels like. But I am mentally strong (pillar two) and because all the pillars are tied together, it makes sense that it enables me to stabilize my emotions.

You need to be able to control your emotions, don’t let your emotions control you!

Pillar four: Social

Man is created to have friends and family and be social. The bible says again and again how important community is. I am very active with my community and spending time with my family is always a priority because it adds to my purpose and leaves me feeling good!

If you feel you have no friends or family, this is something you can’t neglect. You can’t sit there and wait for people to come to you either although I urge you to pray that the right people come into your lives.

Get out there, join groups, see friends, build community! This will nourish your soul more than you will ever know.

Pillar five: Spiritual

This is the biggest one. If I had to pick one pillar and only stick to one, it would be the spiritual aspect of my life!

There’s a passage in the Bible where Jesus and His disciples were in a boat, and while Jesus slept a storm broke out. His disciples were so fearful that they awoke Jesus and questioned if Jesus cared for them. He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the waves “Quiet! Be Still!” then the wind died down and everything was completely calm. Jesus turned and asked His followers “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

We can be doing everything right, but if we have no faith, we will have a hard time weathering any storm! We can adjust the sails of life (physical), check in with everyone on the boat and make sure there is a plan (mental), be in it together (social), and cheer yourself and everyone else on (emotional)… but if you do not have faith, if you are not giving your worries and attention to Jesus, the storm will overtake you.

Spend time with this pillar! Seek Jesus every single day in prayer. Reference the bible as often as you can. Seek counsel of those who know and believe in his light.

This pillar is the most important.
