High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy

Vitamin C Therapy. On my path towards wholeness and healing I have been using a wide variety of alternative therapies to attack and, hopefully, eliminate my cancer. One of these therapies is called High Dose Intravenous (IV) Vitamin C Therapy. Here’s what I have learned about this therapy.

What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C, an essential nutrient found in food, is well known as a strong antioxidant. Even in “normal” amounts (the standard medical community’s recommendation is 65 to 90 milligrams per day, up to 2,000 milligrams per day), vitamin C has been shown to boost your immune system, increase your resistance to infection, and help protect your body against disease.

What is High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy?

High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy is just what it sounds like: A very high dose of Vitamin C that is administered intravenously. While I have taken doses as high as 75 grams (that’s 75,000 milligrams) at two-week intervals, my current treatment is 25 grams once a week. At the Hope 4 Cancer Institute clinic in Mexico where I am now an outpatient, the usual treatment for inpatients is 25 grams, three times a week.

How does High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy Work?

High dose vitamin C has been studied as a treatment for cancer since the 1970s, and laboratory studies have shown that it may slow the growth and spread of a variety of types of cancer cells.

In high enough doses, vitamin C can potentially kill cancer cells outright. The way this works is that vitamin C interacts with iron and copper inside your cells to produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. When very high concentrations of this hydrogen peroxide build up in the cancer cells, it can damage the cancer cells from the inside out in a way that causes them to die.

What will High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy do to my healthy cells?

One of the things that I love about High Does IV Vitamin C Therapy is that studies show it doesn’t harm healthy cells at all. Normal cells contain an enzyme that quickly catalyzes and gets rid of that hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide only builds up to high concentrations in cancer cells, which are deficient in this enzyme and therefore cannot get rid of it.

Why does High Dose Vitamin C Therapy have to be done intravenously?

To be effective, a very high dose of vitamin C is required. However, your body limits the amount of vitamin C that it will absorb through your intestines. If you took 25 grams (25,000 milligrams) of vitamin C at one time by mouth, your body would only absorb about 500 milligrams of this; the rest will simply come out in your urine. The IV is used to bypass this, and get the vitamin C directly into your blood stream.

How do you get started with High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy?

Because this is an alternative therapy, your regular family doctor or internist is not likely to be willing to do it. My personal experience is that it is the Functional Medicine practitioners and doctors who specialize in alternative medicine who offer this therapy.

Of course, you should not attempt this treatment by yourself. High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy should only be done under the supervision of properly trained medical personnel, and patients with certain risk factors should not undergo this therapy at all.

What’s it like to get High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy?

Each of my therapy sessions takes about three hours, including the time it takes to set up the IV. Other than the fact that I’ve got an IV in my arm during this time, I don’t experience any pain or discomfort from the treatment itself.

I have not experienced any negative side effects from this treatment. However, regardless of what it’s doing to my cancer, I have noticed a couple of positive side effects. First, I usually feel more energized for a day or two after treatment. This is not surprising, given that human studies of this therapy in cancer patients have shown improved quality of life and improvement in physical, mental and emotional functions—including reduced fatigue.

Second, since I’ve been doing High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy I’ve noticed that my immune system is stronger. In the past when others in my household would come down with colds or flus, I always got ill, too. Now there have been several times when those around me got sick and I did not.

The bottom line is, High Dose IV Vitamin C Therapy is a strong therapy that can really help support your immune system. I’ve seen the difference in how much stronger I feel, and I’ve seen that it can be beneficial for others, including people who do not have cancer. I usually take 2000mg of vitamin C daily and I rest on my IV day. How about you? Have you tried vitamin C IV? Do you take it orally? Share your experience here with me. Thank you for reading!
